Personality: "If I can't have Attilan, no one will. I will let the dome collapse and suck the life out of every one of you!" One of Maximus' most prominent weakness - and strongest traits - is his arrogance. Based on a comment early on, it's evident that Maximus frequently raises arguments against his brother (the king). He truly believes that he's smarter than the rest of the royal family - and he's not afraid to let them know he thinks that way, either. It's not uncommon to see Maximus rolling his eyes while he listens to them talk. The fact that his ideas are considered to be radical only serves to make him think more highly of himself, along with the newfound love and support he receives from the rest of Attilan
Unsurprisingly, Maximus is also selfish. He feels as though he's been cheated out of everything, and so the world owes him - and what he wants is rightfully his to take. While this seems most obvious with his obsession over becoming king, even that is an ulterior motive in his greed. His sole goal is to change their laws so that he gets a second chance at Terregenesis, to become a great Inhuman like all the others, and he admits he has no intentions of creating an Attilan for the people - only for Maximus. His selfishness extends, too, to people, specifically his brother's wife. Operating on a "mine or no one's" basis, he doesn't hesitate to take something dear of her's in a misguided bid to get her sympathy.
Maximus has a fragile psyche. His whole life, he has always felt second best. The added insult to injury came when his Terregenisis did not give him gifts, but rather turned him human. In the eyes of other Inhumans, he was merely a second class citizen. He feels looked down upon, unappreciated (to the extent that when he's included in important business, he is genuinely surprised but it), and this perception of being unwanted is his strongest motivator. Everything he is - his intelligence, his drive, his selfishness - is fueled by the desire to prove that he is much more than anyone thinks he is. It pushes him to extremes. Not only does Maximus move quickly from being caring and understanding to using fear to manipulate people, his temper also escalates quickly. His jumps from angry to abuse to murder are quick and unpredictable, his rage subsiding quickly once he's found an outlet for it.

Like everyone, though, Maximus also has his strengths. His charisma is a trait that the other royals seem to lack. He knows what words to say and how to say them, how to plant ideas in people's heads and help them grow. Presenting himself as a voice of the people, he gains their favour quickly, particularly because he's open and vocal about his own shortcomings (that is, that he's merely human now living amongst Inhumans). In fact, when another young Inhuman comes out of Terregenesis with seemingly no powers, it is Maximus who steps towards him and speaks for him, claiming that "they'll find something wonderful with the him yet." It is this show of apparent concern, when combined with speaking out against Attilan's oppressive caste system, that earns him his support.
Maximus also demonstrates a high level of both intelligence and cleverness, from basic observation to advanced technologies. When it comes to the world playing out around him, Maximus frequently ignores the action in favour of the reaction. He knows that he's disadvantaged with his status as human so he chooses to gain the upper hand on his enemies by knowing who they are, rather than their physical weaknesses. Maximus does not hesitate in a situation. He's quick on his feet with a solution if something fails - when the last remaining royal flees the city rather than support him as planned, he uses it to his advantage. His high level of intelligence shows through with his understanding of advanced genetics and his curiosity to discover how DNA can be spliced and manipulated. From his home on the moon, Maximus has no troubles with organizing an entire research campaign to study earth's Inhumans. Science continues to be an apparent knack for him - he easily hacks into the safety dome that covers Attilan, ensuring his safety as he is the only one able to keep the system active and functional. No one seems to have the ability to override his changes.
Above all, Maximus is ambitious. Like any many who believes he has a higher calling, he's pushed by a desire to succeed. Every one of his actions has a purpose, even the most seemingly normal things all push towards his end game. It makes him meticulous, calculated, and shows his hand as an opportunist - Maximus knows that in order to get what he wants, he has to bide his time, he has to work at what he wants and strike when the timing is perfect.
"Now you are more like me. Almost human. Now you know how it feels when people stare at you, dismiss you. Like you did to me."
The strangest thing, perhaps, about Maximus, is the love he genuinely holds for his family. There are countless incidents where he is scorned by them, or taunted, or ignored by them. Maximus makes it known to them that they're the source of his disdain. He often tells them that they abandoned him, calls them out on how poorly they treat him, but when he's left to his own devices he still cares for them. Beyond getting what he wants, he wants his family to be there for him, to look at him and love him, and one occasion he becomes emotional and hesitant - he says he wishes his family were there, that he was surrounded by loved ones. He craves the love that he has for them, though he knows he'll never get it.
